![]() ![]() ‘a righteous mix of pleasure, anarchy and empowerment’ ( The Line Of Best Fit) Social Lubrication was on the end of loads of praise from the critics:. I hope not, and that their appearances at festivals over the summer and their own headlining tour later in the year reignites a well-deserved interest.” My one concern is that the new album hasn’t sold as well as the last one, which makes me wonder if they are part of that cycle that’s always been with us, where a band bursts onto the scene, gathers itself a large fan-base, often of folk who are at school/college/university, but whose changing priorities as they move on in life means the music becomes less important. They make music which is vibrant and energetic, but are more than capable of slowing things down to get their viewpoints across in ways that very much appeal to a modern audience, whose awareness of social and political issues is refreshing and welcome. “Dream Wife are a smart and very sassy group. They make a magnificent racket in the live setting with a refreshing and welcome on-stage approach in which they are quick to call out any boorish behaviour from males in the audience, while also insisting that space down the front in the mosh-pit be reserved for ‘bad bitches’ (to which all genders are welcome to be part of). ![]() “A London-based trio whose frantically fabulous mix of punk, indie, and pop has been captured on three studio albums. I wrote a guest post a few months ago over at No Badger Required in which I referenced a few all-female bands, and said this about Dream Wife:. I’m guessing hopes were quite high for this one, but it barely dented the chart, spending a solitary week at #73 before disappearing. I'm still very much into this series, and look forward to the next volume. The tenth and final instalment of this occasional feature, in which I’ve tried to draw your attention to some albums that have been purchased in 2023 and which I reckon are worth highlighting.ĭream Wife‘s third album, Social Lubrication, landed in June, some three years after the previous release, So When You Gonna had taken the trio into the UK Top 20. I think the depth put into it, the dark reasoning and everything combined with how it's shown, works. While I know that this plot could be too much, too cliché or whatever, it doesn't bother me. ![]() While we know what happened on Ciel's side up to this point, it doesn't answer how his twin is currently alive and back at the mansion. This still leaves the present quite a mystery. While he usually seems to be on Ciel's side, he is also a smart, manipulative demon. We see his formless demonic self, in pieces, and we get to see him negotiate terms with Ciel. We get to see quite a bit more of that in this volume. Sebastian has always been a rather upstanding butler, with only glimpses of his real power and the real devil inside him. Ciel was just a child, and he was put through unspeakable things, to the point where he would do anything to survive, and was put in a situation that makes survival the only option. It's an interesting new look at Sebastian and Ciel's characters. We see what happened that killed the other Phantomhives, what happened to Ciel's twin, and how he was led to create the agreement with Sebastian, the devil. We finally get the full story in this volume. I know it’s been super successful so hopefully not. I hope not bc despite some bumps (I could have done without the whole pop idol crap), it’s been one of the most entertaining series I’ve read/watched. I am worried this could mean we’re nearing the end of the series. It’s also a little disappointing that we’re getting the trite “evil twin” storyline. though I do like how Sebastian the dog was always protecting little Ciel. 2 whole volumes all in the past? I’m pretty bummed bc if already figured out that “our” Ciel was the younger twin and the other twin was still “alive.” I’d also surmised that Sebastian had devoured the older twin’s soul on “that day,” so now I’m guessing that the undertaker’s experiments to bring back the dead are tied to the older Ciel somehow? Maybe? There’s obviously no soul, or something off with the older twin and I’m dying to find out what happens IN THE PRESENT, bc most of the flashbacks we’ve already seen in part, I’d figured out, or don’t really add anything. ![]()
